    Complementary Zine “TOKYO dec. 2024

    Limited Edition of 30

This zine compiles and documents my year 2024. Meant as a little physical trinket, the zine came with an additional complementary zine featuring photographs taken on my most recent trip to Tokyo in December of 2024. As usual, the zine came with a personalized letter as well. The 30 existing copies were gifted to my friends and family members.

The zine features photographs of people and places taken throughout the year, many on black and white analog film, personal writings, and a number of songs that were of some significance.

The zines and letter were sown shut in a translucent handmade envelope, requiring the receiver to either force their entry or find creative ways to non-destructively open it, leading to unique and inventive ways of opening it, further enhancing the personalized experience.

    places of certain significance

This photo project traces back the artist’s time in Hong Kong and the experiences he made there over these two years. It represents an attempt at creating a somewhat comprehensive documentation of the places visited, places where certain experiences were made, or simply places that stayed in the artist’s memory just by themselves, without necessarily any significant moment attached to them. And while this project is a very personal one in that it condenses a most significant time of the artist’s life, it mostly just remains a seemingly random accumulation of images for others who have not shared a moment with him in one of these places. Still, these images are able to evoke certain things in others too, make them wonder why a certain place is included, what might have happened there, or even make them wonder about their own places that have a certain significance to them. Every place can be of certain significance for someone, no matter how seemingly bland or mundane it is.

All pictures in this book are shot on analog black and white film with the square pictures being shot on 6×6 medium format film specifically for this project over a span of two months in October and November of 2023. The double spreads, as well as the pictures usually printed on the left, are shot on 35mm film and are archival images that have been taken during the two years in Hong Kong. By including these images, the artist tries to expand on simply revisiting places around Hong Kong and broaden the meaning of a certain place, give more context, or add a more personal note to it. In total, this book contains 43 photographs of which 31 are medium format and twelve 35mm pictures.

+852 is the telephone country code of Hong Kong. A place where we have spent two of the most significant years of our lives, participating in the double degree program of Digital Media at Leuphana and Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong.

This exhibition is not just an amalgamation of the works that we have produced abroad, but a materialization of our collective memories. It is a showcase of artworks that smelt together the different perspectives and circumstances that we have encountered in Hong Kong. The City is often overwhelming and extreme, with stark contrasts ranging from rich to poor, nature to urban, freedom to suppression. And yet we are in love with the city as a seemingly endless source of inspiration and creativity and as a former, beloved home

    Band Portrait

    2023

Sound waves is a new series which dives into the minds of some of our favorite musicians. Mong Tong is a duo from Taiwan, made up of brothers Hom Yu and Jiun Chi, who are known for their psychedelic music music inspired by the occult and traditional superstitions. We caught up with them in London during their European tour last year, where they opened for Japanese psychedelic rock band Kikagaku Moyo. Tune in to learn more about their journey through sound, and how they feel a strong connection to old venues through their music.
